  I don't understand the hate this got from critics in 1999. Sure, it's a simple and straightforward adventure story, but it's well made, has decent acting, good action, and moves at a breezy rate. The dark fantasy vibe is great, too.

  Charlton Heston being Charlton Heston and Jack Palance as a crazy guy are the only characters worth anything in this movie, and they only show up for a bit so they can't exactly save the whole movie. Other than that, the special effects look really nice, you can tell where the money went [not on the actors or the script, that's for sure].

  I'd still be interested in seeing the original Japanese theatrical cut, if that ever sees the light of day.

  Bizarre technology. Hyper-violence. Weird sex. Secretive organizations. A main character losing grip with reality. Yep, it's gotta be a Cronenberg movie. Though in this case it's David Cronenberg's son.
