Always delightful when a mystery can blow the mystery halfway through but ask interesting enough questions that it can pull you on through to the end anyways. Doubly so when it creates an alternate narrative track specifically to undermine the otherwise shallow cruelty of the venal, rich subjects gleefully clawing at an inheritance none of them need and fewer have any right to.
One of those movies that makes me remember that I love movies. As full of visual irony and silliness as Johnson's other stuff, though by far the most offbeat.
I wish I were enough of an asshole to pretend I really like this new kind of Terrence Malick film, but by about an hour in I get overwhelmed by the sense that just about every scene would be better if it were much, much shorter. Maybe it's the staggering lack of contrast in how the movie is shot or maybe it's just that it strikes me more as a knock off version of Baraka, but I simply can't help but to think "I get it" most of the way through.
