Robert Eggers’ fourth feature is likely to be his most polarizing, due to its ties to “masterpiece” tier source material, one of the most formative reference points in the world of cinematic horror. I imagine even Eggers himself had to overcome a mix of dread and a sense of impotence in the face of such an ambitious remake; a certain hubris must have been his chariot as he set about this momentous task; no doubt a horde of Murnau purists…
