It's really hard to suspend disbelief when all these Japanese people speak English to each other with the most ridiculous accents... And then one of them apparently learns "real" English in the course of the movie? And they speak to Americans the same way they do among each other? Confusing as hell

This film very much succeeded in getting me emotional about things I already knew about. The worst thing (which is never explicitly stated) is that the bottles Hilda is fishing out of her river are our bottles, and the climate that ruined her family's farm is our fault.

I love how the camera amplifies the disoriented feeling, and how the lighting conveys information about the story. It's impressive how the mystery takes the viewers with it, at times extremely confusing, but always very engaging. You have to readjust your core assumptions about the setting several times, but in the end a satisfying picture emerges.
