  An outlier from Carpenter’s catalogue. Felt detached from much of the dialogue due to the overtly cool tone of the cast. Unsure if this was a product of overacting or a direction from the fellas behind the camera but it was a bit ridiculous and fatiguing. The relentless push of these inveterate criminals seemed to be a bit too fabulous for my liking as well. Couldn’t buy into it. Felt like it was feeding into some period moral panic over the degeneracy of the decade’s youth. Pass!

  Never had to stop a film halfway before. What a wretched mess. Imagine superimposing a comically hoarse narration over incredibly dull interactions between lifeless characters for almost two hours.

  Haneke is skilled at teasing out the unsavoury notes which linger at the recesses of the collective human psyche. Notes we’d rather dismiss; yet, as he shows, they’re infectious character can be hard to suppress. Oft leading to quizzical conclusions and exhibitions of character that challenge our often monolithic descriptions of ourselves, especially of our morality. Additionally, suffocating ennui. Lots of that.
