This movie is a bit insulting because it thinks it can get away with exploring the road movie genre by purely adding a gay/lesbian lens. The characters are not developed at all and the humor leaves much to be desired. The crime/chase element in the script is also forced beyond belief; I’m surprised this even got green-lit. Tragedy of Macbeth was too self-serious and Drive-Away Dolls is too simplistic in its kookiness. It’s almost like if these two made films together, they’d strike the perfect balance. Oh wait…!
Gregory Peck is effortlessly charming but the film’s script is overly preachy. The well realized characters at the beginning degrade into vessels for commentary on anti-Semitism and bigotry. They speak of practically nothing else; at this point, they’ve betrayed the actual characters. Their individualism is gone and all you hear is the screenwriter click-clacking away about their message. I just know that watching this movie is probably Kanye’s idea of hell. It’s also peak irony that this was made by a man who didn’t show tolerance for his peers when it really mattered.
Got to watch this classic in IMAX in Tokyo. It’s weird because the more I watch this movie, the more it becomes like visiting an old friend. I have memories of the best moments, but on this new visit, I find another reason why we’re friends. We catch up but also reconcile on how we’ve changed.
