A Time Far Past 2004
Best adaptation the novel, or more accurately the better half of it, could've had, or probably will ever has, and not terribly deserving. It's really not such a great book. Lê Lựu's writing is preachy, self-indulgent, on occasion to the point of masturbatory, not to mention lacks any compassion for its characters (aside from his self-insert, of course). Le style c'est l'homme, et cetera. The story itself, though, is compelling and shines through; and it is the most genuine parts he could mustered that get adapted, with much needed closure at the end.

Only other thing I've seen from him was the short at Berlinale a few years back, and it was decent: the premise was simple but it achieved what it set out to do, with some nice imagery too. The film then ended right when the point was starting to get annoying. This, on the other hand, didn't end, lasted four times as long, and then some. And like the short: pretty images, not terribly much to say.
