Narcissus and Psyche is one of the strangest and most fascinating films I have ever seen! Gábor Bódy explores so many different ways to tell us the story, with stylized visuals and camera movements that constantly grab our attention and thrust us further into this bizarre tale. Bódy experiments with darkness and light and comes up with some truly breathtaking shots. The whole film plays like a surrealistic dream (sometimes nightmare) of 19th century Europe, where the main characters experience…

The Kreutzer Sonata 1956
This early work by Rohmer desperately needs more exposure. The French New Wave is here in the beginning stages and anything is possible. Watching this filled me with excitement over seeing all these talented young critics and aspiring filmmakers, knowing what was about to emerge from that group. The film is brimming with energy and should please any fan of Rohmer's. Highly recommended!

The Vampires or, The Arch Criminals of Paris 1915
Irma Vep, Satanas, Moréno, Mazamette, such a wonderful set of characters. Watching the film today, you notice Mazamette's constant awareness that he is in a film, looking straight into the camera and winking or giving a sly smile (even funnier when you see that his kid is also aware of the audience), it feels very postmodern and fresh. The action is fast-paced and often suprisingly gripping. The influence it had on Rivette's Out 1, Noli me tangere is evident. A…

The Naked Kiss 1964
With the opening scene just bursting out of the frame and attacking the audience right at the start (reminding me of the opening scene from the silent masterpiece Ménilmontant), The Naked Kiss grabs your attention and won't let go. With traces of Sirk's melodrama and the pulpy noir atmosphere, Fuller tells a dark and sinister tale, moving between cynicism and unabashed sentimentality. Gutsy work, highly recommended!
