  Some studioso vecchio somewhere must've written on the swarming presence of ants as metaphor for the creeping scourge of modernity within post-war Italian arts; the ants which surround Umberto and Maria, - although as with much else in this film, subtly and quietly - find a more terrifying parallel in Calvino's 'The Argentine Ant' (also appearing in 1952!), in which an un-assuming family, having moved to a relative's old farmhouse, are slowly overwhelmed by both the unsettling presence of over-sized…

  There was a period where I would watch this film every day for weeks on end. Its aura remains intact and the glee I feel at Withnail's slurred indignations or the fluctuation between I's pensive, maudlin narrations and his manic frenzies is elevated with every viewing. There's always time for a drink.
