For me, the so-called “Depression Trilogy” of Antichrist, Melancholia, and Nymphomaniac are top tier Trier.
The House That Jack Built is a perfect follow up, and if it turns out to be the final theatrical feature film for Lars von Trier then it will be a more than fitting swan song, particularly as it relates directly to von Trier and his relationship to his own art, and the Dante’s Divine Comedy inspired epilogue.
Lars may be a provocateur, but there is sincerity and honesty behind everything he does. And even at his darkest, there is a playfulness to his work.
