  Righting Wrongs 1986

  My introduction to Cynthia Rothrock, and now I really need to see Yes, Madam where she plays opposite Michelle Yeoh.
  Sundays on Fire essentially has two tiers: your God tier classics from acclaimed directors—like Bullet in the Head and The Mission—and your standard fare like this one: not bad, not great, always fun, worth the watch (of course Corey Yuen fans might say it belongs to the first category). The crowd energy is always on point at these screenings and I truly look forward every month.

  Given the setup and subsequent trip to hell, I really wanted to love this more than I did. Sometimes I just have an off day though, so I think a rewatch is in order. To hell and back again.

  Soderberg doing his half-documentary-style fly-on-the-wall thing, and it works well here. Nothing mind-blowing, although maybe it hit differently when it came out 15 years ago. It's sometimes easy to forget that our views of sex work and pornography are constantly evolving, and that evolution, like everything, has been rapidly accelerated by the internet.   I unabashedly love David Lynch and have slowly been catching all of his films on 35mm, but since this is probably the hardest to watch film in his filmography, I wasn't exactly "looking forward" to this screening. The first section with Agents Desmond and Stanley has some delightfully fun moments, but once we really get into Laura's story, there isn't much light or hope. It's an incredibly depressing and harrowing tale, but perhaps the most important one to show following…
