The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

    ★★★

The first feature length animated film for the Looney Tunes. Starring a zanny Daffy Duck and timid Porky The Pig as they need to get a job to save their house. They eventually stumble upon an aliens plot to blow the world up.

Very comforting in the age of cgi and vfx to go back to a hand drawn cartoon. The art is impressive with vivid colors. It may be my age showing but it felt like a generic story…

A little heavy handed compared to Bong Joon Ho’s other films.
Lot of different ideas and themes in this one: questions about the ethics of using human guinea pigs, how relationships should work with clones, the colonization of native species. Maybe not all of them are new ideas (I’m thinking of Tom Cruise’s Live Die Repeat or Ho’s Okja) but this film bundles them up in a new exciting scifi setting/ip.

Artsy choice to shoot it in black and white.
Our villian has no dialogue the entire movie which adds to the creep factor.
How can this movie be worse than part 1? Instead of a sterile operation performed by a mad scientist, go with an abused mentally unstable man who’s inspiration comes from obsessively watching part 1 and who tries to sloppily recreate it. Brilliant idea to have part 1 be a fictional movie in this universe btw. Makes me…

I like that every cap movie has us question our loyalty to government and has espionage themes.

The film makes sure to make a point that Sam Wilson is doing it as a normal human instead of a super soldier which ups the stakes.

Harrison Ford is the best he’s looked in a while.
