Such a lovely film that doesn’t pander to or patronise its elderly protagonists. It’s a purely refreshing and original take, and one that the Academy once again shit the bed on not recognising it at all.
Fred Herschsinger is so reminiscent of Joaquin Phoenix in this, that I felt like they missed a trick in his Gladiator II casting.
Really appreciated how well acted this is. The way it convincingly plays with your perception of what’s really happening or not, is unsettling and provides enough creeps (particularly with a very good sense of sound design). Not one for those expecting a ton of jump scares, as it more firmly sits in the psychological horror bracket. Kyle Gallner deserves to be a bigger star.
I’m aware that as a viewer you’re invited to put as much subtext into characters as you want to, however when your film is called Anora, it’s a tad strange to give her so little upfront characterisation. It’s a testament to how much Mikey Madison brings to her role to help keep that character aloft.
