    Jack Quaid might be getting typecast as a "Hughie Type", but at least he's good at it.

    This film is a fun inversion of some classic genre horror/suspense tropes. I wish I had gone into this one without knowing the early "twist", but it was such a heavy part of the marketing, you kind of couldn't miss it.     Beautiful animation, solid characters, an engaging fantastical world, and excellent music. This is a great addition to Miyazaki's body of work.

    I do think it feels a little clunky in a narrative sense though. I did watch the dub, so maybe the original dialog would have cleared up some of the clunk.

    I watched this movie and Mulholland Drive pretty close together the first time round, and I found how weird and also intentional Lynch's style was to be extremely interesting. I originally rated both films 5 starts, because they seem so cohesive unto themselves, and they both provoked a lot of further thought from me. The only Lynch film I had seen previously was Dune, and it wasn't exactly representative of his larger body of work.
