This might be my favourite film. It is effortlessly funny and still holds up to this day. The fact this 4K copy came with a disclaimer from the US Defence Department claiming the events in this film could never happen shows how it is prescient even today.

And how many films pack so many iconic characters into 90 minutes?

We have General Jack D Ripper who sees communist plots everywhere and finds a loophole in the command structure to launch…

The runtime makes this film daunting and potentially inaccessible for some but I assure you it's worth it. Watching this in Blu Ray for the first time (this film requires the highest quality you can see it in) the desert landscapes really pop off the screen. One quick cut to the rising sun had me fixated. The film is the summation of adventure, even the politicking has tantalising glimpses of ecotic cities from the balcony windows.

Rather anti-climatic. I enjoyed the slow burn of the first 90 minutes. Players fell out the game. Ralph Fiennes seemed to act indifferently while slowly increasing in promience. And then the outsider, late arriving, cardinal is picked and we discover he has a womb. Fiennes reacts with horror to this revelation and the film ends.

Really? As an ending I don't think much of it. The new pope also having genuine skeletons in the closet would have been far more…

I appreciated the artistic way this story was told, but it made for grim watching and didn't hold my attention. After 90 minutes of bad situation following bad situation I just wanted it to end.

Very tough to sit through. Unsure if I'm a fan of the style - lots of long scenes round a dinner table and an ending that implies what we have seen will recur again 100s of times.

Also was expecting more focus on the father picking up the pieces while his wife is away (certainly what the synopsis on here implies) but instead we quickly cut back to the mother's return and lots of time on various people's reactions to it. Mabel undoubtedly star of the show but after a while her performance became exploitative - making a show out of her mental health issues.

Bong filmography complete. I'm ready for Mickey next year.

I finished on maybe the low point of his career so far in my opinion. The opening was pretty great (even if I found the CGI monster jarring). But then it fell into an uneven mess of monster movie clashing with a pandemic with a strange government conspiracy plot thrown in that went nowhere. The lightheartedness is almost off putting at times. The comedy fell completely flat. Not long after the…
