Not content with the best Coppola, Hackman notched the best Friedkin, the best Wes Anderson, the best Tony Scott and the best Eastwood. RIP Coltrane.

It's a film centred around voyeurism, in which the main character is a photographer, but not a single photograph is taken in the entire film. The camera lens is used to look and the flash to stun but never is the photograph used to document.

A problem I have with biopics and in particular the recent trend in those focusing on various 20th century musical figures is how often they just seem like a checklist of events, a filmic glossary rather than an actual narrative. Yeah, I think I agree with those who say Casino is the superior work to Goodfellas, if the film hadn't come out so soon after the latter, or if DeNiro and Pesci were not the leads (though I can't imagine who would replace them), maybe the unflattering contemporaneous comparisons would not have seemed so necessary. For a three hour movie that mostly revolves around conversations at tables it flows with an unbridled force, slaloming through the duelling perspectives of the Vegas boom like a picaresque novel ready to implode. A romantic relic of a time when Cream and Jazz Fusion were signifiers of coolness.
