It had an interesting ambiguity about what I was watching--an inversion/subversion of a single woman in Japan, precise choices of what in the world Yamanaka decides to show us. And then it turns in the final third into someone else again. I'm undecided if that it was for more or less (though not better or worse, she knows what she's doing).

A really strong followup to her debut, and Yuumi Kawai does quite well. The non-protagonists are still a little underwritten, though much less so than in Amiko, Yamanka's first movie.

A melodrama that does more than does much more than illustrate the male-dominated society--it's there, but it's not the point or at least not the only point--instead in its focus on Fumiko, makes a case for art as being work that speaks truthfully. Affecting but clear-eyed in a way that many versions of this story seeming can't be--those male artist with a sexually devoted follower, all self-pitying and big R Romantic. It more than inverts that story, and still feels like something Japanese cinema needs more of.

I think I would really dig an Edo period management sim.

Sometimes the answer to loneliness is not other people.
