Late Spring 1949
My favorite Ozu so far!
His ability to present universal human emotions is unmatched — he’s always focused on love and loss and grief and despair and hope within families. Setsuko Hara’s smile and acting is incredible.
(Also the two short scenes with the baseball kid were hilarious)

Zodiac 2007
Barrett was very annoyed the day he found out I had never seen Zodiac. Maybe he’ll be my friend now.
Shoutout to Toschi for taking the tomato off the BLT and to Graysmith for answering the question, “what do you do for fun?” with “I love to read and I enjoy books.” Sounds like something Charlie would say.
Also, the lake scene messed me up.

Whiplash 2014
Introduced Whiplash to some of my students today! I was kind of nervous beforehand that they wouldn’t like it and I’d have to quit my job.
They liked it and we had a fun discussion about ambition, where the music folder ended up, and how awesome the shot is of Andrew sticking his bloody hand in the bucket of ice. This movie rules. Better than La La Land?? Prolly not. But maybe.
