Young people in a dying town, both lacking a convincing reason to exist. Lots of sex but nobody really seems to enjoy themselves- there's just nothing else to do. A real knee slapper of a movie.
I'm having a hard time putting my finger on what exactly it is about this film that got me so engaged. That's the genius of Wilder: he is not ostentatious or flashy, but everything just ... works. It kept me up past 9:30 on a Friday so it must be doing something right.
Lemmon and Maclaine create two memorable characters who let others walk all over them because they think it will get them happiness, until they realize it's not what they want at all. Subtle touches (the broken pocket mirror...) and an ending that's uplifting without being saccharine and cliche.
Beautiful set design, lighting, costumes, effects and camera work. I liked Dafoe's Eberhart being out of his depth, rather than swooping in as the immediately confident vampire hunter. Can't recall right now if that's how the character is in the 1922 version.
So why is this leaving me "meh"? For starters, I found Skarsgard's Orlok kind of irritating. All that breathing, grumble bass voice, and that mustache... I get wanting to freshen up the character, but it simply wasn't working…
What in the written-by-Chat-GPT hell did I just watch? The whole plot was nonsensical, and I was feeling stupider after every line of spoken language (let's not call it dialogue) delivered by the humanoid automatons. Avoid.
