  It’s a major copout people say “My favorite idol anime is Perfect Blue”. Trapezium bears much more resemblance to the genre and subverts the elements that actually matter.
  The biggest issue I have with (most) idol anime is that character motivations are aggressively pure, it’s never about money or attention but rather the smiles of our fans offscreen. Trapezium makes that dream plausible by showing 1 cynical actor wrangle the rest without them even catching onto the artifice of their circumstances, retaining their innocence. It’s very funny and respects its characters and genre and never leans into the exploitation expected of a “deconstruction”.

  I’ve had to describe several times what I went to and settled on that it’s a precession of niche memes, internet videos (big audience responses when it used audio from Pupinia Stewart and HRH Collection, felt unearned), and aesthetic imagery (lots of tiktok girls and egirl-ish things) schizo-edited together, sometimes in montage with violence and art history. There is some voice over work and some original footage which I believe is the source of a lot of the credits, but…

  A tsundere romcom with a lot of nice sakuga. I saw a comment say it was “mushy” which was well put— the drama is more impactful than the comedy.
