This felt like half zombie B-movie and half european art film, so naturally I ate it up. If you like the low budget eerieness of Night of the Living Dead or are just hankering for a spooky organ score, give it a shot. The pacing feels uneven so it might seem slow for a genre flick but it had a lot to say about non-conformity in an oppresively bland 1960s american landscape. One of the few movies that works on a mystery science theater level at the same time as a deeper one.

Simultaneously really wished I had seen this earlier but also really glad I didn't see this as a child. Right up there with all of Cronenberg's other work which I really love. I think all of his films manage to stay very weird and disturbing while keeping structurally sound and building suspense at a solid pace, so you don't really want to look away even though you probably should. This one's maybe more about the wild acting than the practical effects but it still delivers on that front in ways I wasn't expecting.

I wore headphones on this rewatch which really drew my attention to the details in the sound design and ambient noise. You can't help but feel freezing cold.

In coming back to this after so much time it's clearer to me what has drawn me to Lynch's work for much of my life. The themes of anxiety and guilt he rips from the subconscious and splatters on the screen are struggles I understand a bit better in my life now.…

Really fun seeing this again with people who haven't seen it all and others that have seen it many more times than me. I love that everyone can connect with different pieces and notice different details. I noticed many more myself this time around but also had more questions that I didn't have on my initial watches.

Rebekah Del Rio's performance really stood out to me on this watch, just how emotionally powerful it is and how it brings out a whole other feeling into a film already stuffed with very confusing feelings.
