Totally nails the real life messiness of adolescent romance, sex, friendship and heartache. It felt more engaging and daring than a mumblecore movie but still had that handmade heart to it. I wish younger-me had seen this when I was taking in a lot of male perspectives on these topics. Also just really cool seeing this time/place/culture captured by a really awesome director. Very happy MOMA screened it.

Eraserhead 1977
I wore headphones on this rewatch which really drew my attention to the details in the sound design and ambient noise. You can't help but feel freezing cold.
In coming back to this after so much time it's clearer to me what has drawn me to Lynch's work for much of my life. The themes of anxiety and guilt he rips from the subconscious and splatters on the screen are struggles I understand a bit better in my life now.…

The Brood 1979
Simultaneously really wished I had seen this earlier but also really glad I didn't see this as a child. Right up there with all of Cronenberg's other work which I really love. I think all of his films manage to stay very weird and disturbing while keeping structurally sound and building suspense at a solid pace, so you don't really want to look away even though you probably should. This one's maybe more about the wild acting than the practical effects but it still delivers on that front in ways I wasn't expecting.
