A lean, mean work of absolute perfect horror. It grips you then tears you apart as the credits roll and it’s just marvelous and baffling this was made in the 60’s.

Crash 1996
Cronenberg has made simultaneously the most horny and yet the most sterile allegory for consumerism and sex. When you have everything and nothing excites you anymore, what else is there to do except find the kink that pushes you to the absolutely limit. I was so fucking anxious everytime Vaughn was tailing the Ballard’s and forcing them all to teeter on the verge of death. When you love driving and your biggest fear of death, this movie is nerve wracking as hell.

The Thief of Bagdad 1940
I didn’t expect to enjoy this is as much as I did, but the charm of classic Hollywood and technicolor just can’t be beat! Clearly it’s a product of its time and we should view it through the lens of its historical context in which brown face was perfectly acceptable. The practical effects here were just perfect and jaw dropping and really make you wonder why something from 1940 looks far better than any modern day MCU CGI monstrosity. Bring back technicolor and bring back practical film making!

Auto Focus 2002
Killer Kinnear and Dafoe performances in this, and Schrader absolutely rips. I love how insincere its production design feels; a perfect analogy to Crane’s faux family man persona that masks his crippling sex and porn addiction. For my first Schrader, I’m pleasantly surprised. I couldn’t be more motivated to dig into his filmography after this one.
