Anora 2024
This might have been one of my favourite films of 2024, like so many other people I know. I loved the characters, how alive they all felt, and especially the movements of the film — the first act feels like a different movie from the second, and the final scene (the heart of the film) once again is utterly surprising and touching in a way I was not expecting (we cried).

I’m thinking a lot about destiny with this film, a significant motif, the way the cinematography pulls characters into rooms of significance as if the camera itself is an agent of destiny. Maybe this is a comment upon adaptation, about mythology and folkloric figures and stories that we know so well. But I’m also thinking about the way Ellen’s destiny seems to be set for her as a young girl desperate for companionship and finding herself instead in a soul…
