The Brutalist 2024
"None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe themselves to be free."
The Brutalist is an impressive balancing act of deep, fleshed out characters and commentary on the migrant experience as a whole in America. It’s a balancing act that I think is successful in both aspects.
Adrien Brody makes you believe in Laszlo Toth, feel his pain. He would be the easy best actor pick for me were it not for the AI accent question marks. Guy…

The Zone of Interest 2023
This film was absolutely hard to watch and horrific, but not in the way I expected. It’s almost as if generally the discussion and portrayal of the history of the Holocaust has been reduced to a few cliches about how it was such a monstrous event and we have to make sure it never happens again.
This film really adds something much more horrific than a bunch of historical actors carrying out heinous events. It makes the Holocaust almost feel…

Heretic 2024
A film that blends horror and religious philosophy? Needless to say it was right up my alley. Anchored by an excellent trio of performances, this was thought provoking as well as enjoyable. I feel like the transition from the first part to the second could have been better executed, but outside of that I loved it. The dialogue too, was quite enjoyable with funny references and interesting debates, I was never bored. Also, exceptional ending mirroring some of the best…

O'Dessa 2025
Genuinely one of the worst movies I’ve watched in the last few years. The director sacrificed all other aspects of filmmaking and storytelling for “style.” Amateur plot. Un believable romance. Poor storytelling. Too bad too, cuz the first 15 minutes were solid. Plus one star for the music though, that at least made the watching it much less of a slog. Most songs were good, 2 or 3 weee actually great.

Black Bag 2025
I liked this quite a bit. I liked the witty conversations, the elevated humor, the combination of thriller and mystery, and the performances. What I liked best was the concise nature. It told an engaging story with nothing superfluous or ridiculous to make it more “exciting.” There was no exposition dump, no overexplaining the stakes or what was going on. It just did its job and I enjoyed myself throughout. The only thing I didn’t really like was the look of it. The visuals felt sterile and lacked the enjoyability of the rest of the film. Just to much washed out and not enough contrast.
