    Pure joy, absolutely nothing like a 20 minute dance break, and Gene Kelly was a fucking powerhouse holy shit. This is one of those movies that you finally see way too late and all the references to it that you’ve unknowingly seen finally click into place. It’s like I’m that much more of a human being than I was before watching. It also explains Damien Chazelle’s whole career lol.

    Kirin Kiki I love you so much. She always stole every scene she was in, what an incredible actress. I’ll watch anything with Kirin. I also want a dorayaki so badddd.

    This is by the girls, for the girls, through and through, and I really liked it for that. Not a perspective we get enough of in film, especially anime. I mean talk about the female gaze lol, 50% of this film is shots of legs. Really impressed by how well conceived and gentle the story is, despite taking time for it to find its stride for me. The animation is great overall, but is a bit sluggish which takes some getting used to, and there are plenty of anime tropes that aren’t really my thing. Loved the music!

    Miyazaki did it better…

    I enjoyed this film a good bit, I like Bong’s weird and surreal style punctuated by Pattinson’s insane, transformative performance. He’s really doing a thing with voices lately that I’m a big fan of. The political themes of the film were not unexpected from Bong and weren’t ineffective necessarily, but I’ve been finding it tiring to watch pseudo-Trump depictions like this in the post-election reality, no fault of Bong’s though. And ultimately I do prefer his…
