Absolutely adored how Carlo Montuori captured the facial expressions of Lamberto Maggiorani, allowing the camera to linger on the details beyond the initial heartbreak, so that we can really get in touch with the feeling of his loss.
There's one scene especially during dinner where Antonio's overjoyed to give him and his son this one little treat, to dream and dine with those "above" his social standing, to prove his worth, and his face falls. In that moment you know what he's thinking, masterful. Powerful stuff.
