Hope is the thing with feathers.
Is it too surreal for ya?
Is it a work of genius or alienating and disingenuous? The Arbor has to be commended for experimenting with form - but I feel it is missing something.
I think this film is as close as we’re going to get to a project that explores social realism and the techniques adopted by Bertolt Brecht. Are the working classes just doomed to wrestle with alienation and atomisation?
There are small specks of hope throughout - but maybe we are meant to feel overwhelmed by a play/film that sounds like the harbour.
I may return to this at a later date. Difficult watch.
I was initially sceptical about this film. Kitchen sink drama is a hard sell in January. I was wrong. This film is jampacked with heart, humour and nuance. Mike Leigh is the gift that keeps on giving. Solid work from the cast and crew. Left me wanting more.
DEUS EX BARKINA. Clever little fella that Penguin. The cheese-loving ‘genius’ bailed out by man’s best friend AGAIN.
