  first time seeing this at the cinema on a very dodgy print (really feel like ACMI of all places should have a decent copy but oh well). nevertheless, so much of this film felt heightened: the battle sequences are astonishing, surely the best depicting this era ever filmed, but the score is particularly affecting. trust peter weir to construct an agonising death scene only to throw fantasia on a theme on top. heartbreaking isn't a strong enough word.

The premise, the logline may as well punch you in the face: two women fell in love in a concentration camp, survived and stayed together until their deaths?
