Newman causally giving another all-timer performance her portraying fast Eddy's midlife crisis, acting justifiably appalled by the 80s and his own complictness in the stuff that appalls him. Cruise is pretty good too as a racist Jimmy Neutron. No way Patrick Tam and Wong Kar Wai didn't eat this shit up

Obvious comparison, but Dylan’s A Hard Days Night actually really fits here. Pennebaker’s claim that Dylan doesn’t know the rules seems just plain wrong. Dylan’s definitely thinking about the camera as a tool, especially in relation to the direct cinema movement that birthed Don't Look Back, and he's also thinking about narrative structure, that's why the Lennon cameo near the end is so fantastic and hilarious. Watching the Like a Rolling Stone scene made me hear the empathy in that song better than I ever have before

Though I once again cannot get behind practically any of the choices made here by Lanthimos and Tony McNamara, I do at least admire that this feels like it has its heart in the right place. Also, sitting through the Christopher Abbott stuff has been the most unbearable theater going experience of the year for me.

The scene where the two…
