Was surprised on this revisit to find that this has Bong's best capital F Filmmaking to date. On the other hand the plot is comparatively thin and I still have no idea what to do with the, uhh, problematic elements in the son's performance. Good movie!

    It Happened at the Inn

One might detect, perhaps, the hint of a metaphor when the characters are named as bluntly as 'Tonkin' and 'Emperor', but this is such a delightfully perverse film that it barrels past any overbearing message it's trying to get across and winds up a being a worthy leftfield addition to the realm of the whodunit flic.

Gleefully upending any expectations or morals we might have expected to burden the plot, it carries itself like a Buñuel film and laces every tender note of family togetherness with bitter irony.

Comically terrible collection of fawning narcissists wax philosophic about how they took advantage of a manic boy wunderkind to his ultimate tragedy. Bonus meta-narrative of the filmmakers treating the material (aka this kid's life story) with the same artless, despicable, selfish, cash-grabbing moral vapidity that almost every person in Gus's life evinced. A miserable viewing experience.
