Sat in silence 10 minutes after the film to ponder it. And then rewatched the first ten minutes of it.
(WARNING: following contains details about early plot but nothing that would be considered massive spoilers)
It was at the rewatch that I realised that it was Seita’s ghost narrating and retelling the story. The opening line was “On the night of September 21, 1945, I died.” Which NOW makes so much sense why the ghost of Seita and Setsuko looked…
What if this js how Jake gyllenahall acts in real life cuz what the fucking hard watch did I just fucking watch
this is probably what Logan Paul watched as a kid and was like “I want to be like that when I grow up”
You could argue that this movie is extremely good (from a femenist perspective) for breaking stereotypes, or extremely bad (also from a femenist perspective) for extremely sexualising women. But my perspective is that it’s just fucking racist as hell cuz what the fuck was the “Chinese muffin” scene or when they played super stereotypical Asian music when an Asian person comes into scene, or when a conversation was happening in Japanese, but occasionally “NI HAO” SLIPS INTO THE SENTENCE??? That’s Chinese? Who the fuck wrote that?? Unless, of course, a Chinese/japanese person wrote that, then disregard the above, this movie is actually funny as hell.
Rewatched it with Isla. It was a LOT sadder and a lot more meaningful than I remember. I think I want to be a better person now.
