You get hints of Crime and Punishment and the movie even feels like a proto-American Psycho but it all comes off so dry to me at the moment. Now 30+ years removed from it’s debut The Player’s satire reads more like a mirror.
Gonna need to revisit this one.
It’s got 80s charm and style going for it. I feel that if this movie was more willing to become a darker black comedy that it would leave more of an impression. As it is though, it has heart.
The more I watch the more I appreciate this movie which seems to be becoming more and more apparent how influential and ahead of the curve it was.
That and how damn reliable and versatile the Juicy Fruits were.
It’s a home invasion horror that doesn’t really aspire to do anything different. It just meanders. You’ve seen this movie done better and you’ve seen it be done worse but in a far more memorable way.
