Amazing cinematography. Some of the scenes in this movie are very well directed, which makes the uninteresting characters, the overbearing score, and the horrible voiceovers that much more disappointing. The directing, cinematography, production design, and acting are what carries this movie.

The character introductions are great. The combination of camera movement, character actions, and acting reveal what the characters are like. Unfortunately, there is very little character development past that point.

What a performance from Marlon Brando. Still not a fan of how Elia Kazan saw himself in Terry Malloy, but if you ignore that, you have a great film with some of the greatest acting from Marlon Brando I've seen yet.

This is a film that has many things going for it. The performances are amazing all around, from Viola Davis as Ma Rainey to the late Chadwick Boseman with perhaps one of his greatest performances yet in his portrayal of Levee. The story and themes of the film are very well realized, offering an intelligent and touching portrayal of black musicians at a time when black people faced severe hardships in the form of segregation. From the great, although not…

How does Coppola go from the Godfather films to this? The movie had a pretty good score, set design and costume design. The acting was okay, with some doing a good job (Gary Oldman), and some doing terrible (Keanu Reeves). The effects were really good, as was all the makeup. It just should have been much better, especially with someone like Francis Ford Coppola as the director. All in all, it was alright.
