  Has anyone else noticed how insane the editing here is? Perfectly weaving between the diverse perspectives of the Sully family. The full breadth of who they are and what they mean to each other is expressed chiefly by the editing. I couldn't stop thinking about it, and I still can't. Rewatch definitely coming up.

  Had someone like Buscapé (Alexandre Rodrigues) with a camera like his been telling the story of his life and his home and not some white guy like Fernando Meirelles, then Cidade de Deus could have been something more than the saviourist trash at its core. No matter how well-crafted and ingenious the film-making (which it all truly is), what real story is there being told here? None.

  Put film-making into the hands of the people whom these characters are meant to portray instead of puppeteering them. Let them seize control of their own narratives.

  Top Gun (1986) was all about enjoying the good times while they lasted because it's a high school dramedy. I mean, of all the places to set that movie, it isn't set during any time of war against any specific enemy like the Soviet Union or North Korea.
