A number of interesting, offbeat moments in this one, and some nice performances from the supporting cast, like Howard Da Silva. But the pace is much too languid, and aspects of the plot make little sense (and not just the ending, which the U.S. military forced Chandler to change). Plus, it's just not very stylish overall. A better director might've made all the difference. I've also never really warmed up to Ladd, but maybe that's my problem. The stuff with William Bendix is pretty great, though.
