Erin Brockovich 2000
phenomenal. immensely struck by the lived-in quality of the world, of every outfit, of every object shown in a home or office. erin is the perfect working class heroine and the film is so thoughtful about the impossibility of everything single moms are put through regularly just to survive while also not viewing her from a distance or letting the audience think she is someone to pity. the line where masry turns around her whole thing on her and asks that she not assume the lady lawyer is stupid just because she went to law school is exactly everything right here. fun! funny! and important! love

The Brutalist 2024
In the most obvious gloss of all time yes the look and scope DID compel me and it IS in my top half of oscar contenders. All the discourse around how the film has been marketed rings true to me while I also feel that I can’t help but be persuaded it IS important for a film of this budget, runtime, and old-school feel to exist. Excited to dig into some criticism particularly around the Zionism stuff and see what I can find on the treatment of sexual violence here. If Maclin can’t get nominated I would not mind Pearce beating out Culkin for this
