Sean Baker’s apprehension to saying anything about the subjects he focuses on leaves you with an emotional wall in regard to the characters. Ani has no interiority that attaches you to anything deeper than surface level. I don’t want a haphazard monologue that explains her feelings lord knows those aren’t great, but the supposed emotional core of the story becomes an almost side character to the narrative till the end where we see a true glimpse of who she is, Mikey Madison is great and the cinematography is on point it just kept me at such arm’s length.
