Exactly what you'd expect - it's a generic music biopic. Good performances, sometimes hacky writing (full of "what's your name again?" "famous person").

The Brutalist 2024
This an impossible film to rate, because I loved it until the last half hour or so. The ending, especially the epilogue and the horrid music in the end credits are so bad it sours the whole experience somewhat, but it can't negate everything that came beforehand, so I don't know quite what to think of it. I won't be mad if it wins best picture (and please, it must win score, what a score! I got goosebumps from the very beginning), but it feels like a missed opportunity.

Reassemblage: From the Firelight to the Screen 1983
I've never seen such a disconnect between what a filmmaker thinks they are doing and what they are actually doing. Minh-Ha says she doesn't want to speak about the people of Senegal, but "speak next to them". And then she uses voice over throughout her film, literally drowning out the voices of the women she films, never allowing us to understand what they say by foregoing subtitles, and peppering her film with several long close-ups of the women's bare breasts.…

Femme 2023
I'm at the Berlinale and this is the second film I've seen *today* with a violently homophobic man who is actually gay after all. So tired of that trope. This was sold to me as a revenge thriller, but there is prescious little revenge to be had here. The protagonist just makes stupid decision after stupid decision and we have to watch the consequences, which are much worse for him than for the violent homophobe. Yay!
