This was a leap down from The Witch and hard to reconcile with the masterpiece that is The Lighthouse. Yes, it was darker and more violent than expected. Also, the world-building was impressive, with the cultural elements a mix of prehistoric and medieval Europe. I loved for instance the belching and farthing during the boy's rite de passage and that the campfire singing seemed to be on the European tonal scale but was equally primal.
