At Long Last Love 1975
At Long Last Love is actually two films, a (highly successful) madcap comedy and a (deeply uneven) musical. It's failings as a musical are heightened by the fact that of the leads, only Madeline Kahn has the skills to pull off everything that's needed--the singing, the dancing, the effortless charisma, the comedic instincts. Her co-stars all possess some of those talents to some degree, but none can do it all.

Bodies Bodies Bodies 2022
Neither the plot nor the Gen Z satire are as clever as this movie thinks it is, which results in some exceptionally sour notes (we're supposed to laugh at the idea that everyone's concerned with the revelation of a mental health issue, for example). There are some effective moments here, but this is uninspired as a whodunit, as a slasher, and as a satire. I'm genuinely shocked at how well it's been received.

MaXXXine 2024
Maxxxine is a strange ending to the trilogy. It's not a horror film, for one thing. Instead, for better or worse, it's a drama with intermittent gore. There's a lot to like: Mia Goth is a fucking star and Ti West's inventive shots and period 80s glitz and (so much grime), but even so the film drags when it should be ramping up, and in the end has more monologues about what it wants to say than it has anything to actually say. By no means a bad film, but also a disappointing ending to this trilogy.
