β€œFreudstein’s house draws me like an infernal magnet… And frightens me… How many have wandered innocently into the waiting spider web? How many more are doomed to follow?”

The final film of the Gates of Hell trilogy, and I like it but feel it’s not quite reaching its full potential. There is an ominous atmosphere, and the kills are violent and well done. Though, it’s a little lackadaisical in not giving us more of them.

    It’s a bit more somber…

β€œBefore me you are a slug in the sun. You are privy to a great becoming, and you recognise nothing!”

The best Lektor film, and this is not close… Glimpse into a world before a lot of this mythos has really developed itself. Part of Lektor’s appeal is that he is not the main point of interest, but can offer unique insights whilst following his own agenda, and is representative of a deeper evil that has taken root and spread.…

Loved those final scenes in the Cambodian temples! The film is beautiful visually, some of the best cinematography I ever saw. I can imagine jiving with it even more on a rewatch.

It was cleverly written and well acted. Though I don’t think I was ever quite so bad as the main character, I found her awfulness to be somewhat relatable for me at that time of my life (I grew up a bit now thankfully), and I imagine late 20-somethings / early 30’s will feel the same.

I don’t know what it was though, but when things got a bit more real at the end, it started to lose me a bit, so I don’t totally feel like I was with her on her journey all the way.

It has a philosophy, and that is what makes it dangerous.

I find this film to be really close to perfection. Can be enjoyed on a purely entertainment level with fantastic practical effects and an offbeat story, but also very ripe for deeper interpretation and analysis. A lot of what happens is ambiguous, not least the ending, which seemed quite bleak. The birth of the new flesh, is death to the individual. But this is transcendent too, and also freeing…

I’m glad I stuck with this. I wasn’t exactly enjoying the first half, and almost lost interest a few times. The focus upon the trial wasn’t exactly bad, but a bit slow and procedural for my tastes. I was worried the whole film might be like that.

But, the second half changes tack and is very good indeed. It becomes more like a standard giallo. The characters were interesting, and I became intrigued to find out what was happening as…
