Mickey 17 2025
There's a beautiful sex scene juxtaposed by a politician preaching about banning sexual activity for the sake of saving calories to maximize efficiency and what not. I think all of Mickey 17's themes can be boiled down to that one sequence. This is a world that has forgotten about love, compassion, and selflessness. What happens when human lives are reduced to cogs in a machine? Human connection is lost. Emotions are left unresolved. All the while, the elite revel in their sauces and rare Persian carpets. Mickey 17 makes no attempt at subtlety, but the story it tells is important all the same.

Evil Dead Rise 2023
An unforgivingly cruel, wicked, and nauseating blood bath. Very much a blend of the Álvarez sequel and Raimi’s original trilogy. The apartment setting works so well and is a nice change of pace for the series. Title card of the year!

Pearl 2022
The perfect complimentary film to X (2022). Whereas X is the ambitious deviant-slasher film, Pearl is the smaller-scaled character-driven story of Pearl. While it is a bit of a slow burner, it is a great character study of the titular character, and the payoff is absolutely worth it in the end. Mia Goth’s incredible performance also makes it all worth the viewing. Not to mention, the film pays homage to films of the mid 1900’s with its score, transitions, and especially its technicolor. Overall, Pearl is not only a great follow up to X, but a great film on its own that is definitely worth checking out.
