Is Vogler taking a fat dump in the snow Robby Müller’s best shot of all time??? 2 lonely dudes learning to express themselves while driving a cinema projector repair truck through East Germany? teeew easy! A lot of the film coincides with material i’m learning in class, so felt like perfect timing to finally watch. Hard to decide if this or Alice in the Cities is my fav of the Road Trilogy.
Loved the shot choices and overall aesthetic. Story is totally tragic, but the humor and tenderness within it payoff very well. There’s actually one scene in this that’s soooo unbelievably funny, worth a watch for that scene alone. Really liked Irm Hermann’s performance.
Great pre-code humor and dark subject matter wrapped in a creatively shot/edited package. Steers clear of sexist and racist clichés of the time. Gilda Carlson’s character is hardcore!!
The first time I watched Vertigo, I enjoyed it, but felt a bit let down by the 3rd act. This time around though it felt nearly perfect to me. I think having a better understanding of Noir now helped me understand what a complete shakeup of the genres conventions it is. James Stewart is soooo damn good in this. His transformation from likeable detective to controlling monster feels like a precursor to the anti-hero’s of the 70’s. Love the uncanny sequences at the mission and forest.
