Thief 1981

James Caan constantly snapping at waiters and waitresses. So many cool shots and angles. People always talk about Nolan doing the homage to Heat in The Dark Knight, but he’s also borrowing from this movie too. I love the struggle of him trying to get to a stable suburban life. The score is awesome and gets so overpoweringly loud. Crazy that Willie Nelson outlived James Caan. Caan’s performance is so good - you are utterly lost in his story about prison at the diner. The villain speech about owning him, his family, and his skills is wonderful and terrifying. Explosive blood spatter deaths.

Hurlyburly 1998

Garry Shandling, Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, and Chazz Palminteri are horrible Hollywood bros who hang out and pass women (Anna Paquin, Robin Wright, Meg Ryan) and drugs back and forth while they complain about their lives and situations and toxic mindsets. Playwright dialogue that makes you cringe, but well acted as you’d imagine from the cast. Ultimately, totally meandering and like you’re listening to the ramblings of the coked out drunk people at a party who don’t realize how trashy they are or that their deep thoughts aren’t all that deep.

Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV 2000
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I liked that Stan Lee did the opening narration, but I don’t like that they write off 2 and 3. School shooting has got to be up there as the most tasteless thing Troma ever did, truly irredeemable and shameful. Lemmy, Ron Jeremy, James Gunn (should be canceled for this performance as a Steven Hawking type, not the tweet), Eli Roth, Lloyd Kaufman, Corey Feldman, the usual Troma cameos. Shapeshifting Toxie, wtf? Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD crossover idea is actually really…

Just jump scares and an occasionally creepy kid. A science-y version of Pet Semetary but way more boring.
