  A movie that aesthetically plays like the start of an alien invasion movie, except in this story, the invaders are all too familiar. A desert camo humvee rolling down the street, a crucifix overlooking a parking lot, a child atop of a ferris wheel peering down above all, a tiny speck in the sky, all seeing, all knowing.

  Hopefully more filmmakers will provide as valliant an effort as Kirsten Johnson did here to try and craft new metaphors and tools to use in our language of oppression, if only so the extremely tired "Big Brother" can finally retire.

  Garden State is a Zach Braff passion project, for all the positive and negative connotations that has. Many works of fiction are semi-autobiographical; in writing, blood on the page can be very potent. Garden State never reaches the levels of impact that better works of this nature have; Braff fails to capture his life in a way that is engaging or authentic.
