  a gauzy period piece, and that period is the 90s (romantic comedy, shakespeare, ridiculous musical cues, pillow fights, sex scenes, goatees, ben affleck, crumpling up papers, wit, academy award for best picture)

  one thing i'll say about this film (and i guess the series at large) is that it is never so pompous as to be about aging or infirmity or maturity or any other "weighty" topic that's bogged down the sad action heroes of the last generation.  no... for tom cruise and co, even in a film called "dead reckoning," it's still mostly about things like THE KEY and THE GIRL and THE MISSION
