  one thing i'll say about this film (and i guess the series at large) is that it is never so pompous as to be about aging or infirmity or maturity or any other "weighty" topic that's bogged down the sad action heroes of the last generation.  no... for tom cruise and co, even in a film called "dead reckoning," it's still mostly about things like THE KEY and THE GIRL and THE MISSION

  really, frustratingly, aggressively, loudly just okay.  begins as a familiar but effective serial killer thriller, and becomes something way dumber.  what intriguing, original ideas it has it leaves curiously undeveloped; its mediocre ideas eventually take over the film.

  maybe the archetypal example of how contemporary prestige horror movies can never be as good as the films they attempt to emulate: they were responding to the world, and these are just responding to other films
