The spirit of naturalism, the essence of magic realism. It’s been almost four years since I watched Lazzaro, I can still feel the intertextuality between the two films. The director has always exploring the modernity’s intervention in rural life, not as a rejection of modernity, but as a curiosity about finding a balance between the two. Perhaps only a female director can maintain this gentle and tender attitude of self-questioning. Very heartwarming.

Amazing…It continues the emotions typical of the later stages of French New Wave, but put it in a more East Asian way, I can even see Rohmer’s shadow. Hong Sang-soo reconstructs the New Wave, while Hamaguchi deconstructs, and it’s hard to say whose first feature film is better.
Hamaguchi, you are truly more pessimistic than Hong, as  passion is like water in a bamboo basket - only solitude remains.
P.S. Takako looks so much like Binochi…omg
