A Real Pain 2024
a moving film that traces the lives of third-generation Jewish Americans wrestling with the weight of horrors they didn’t live through but feel all the same. how do you make sense of a pain that isn’t yours but is somehow still a part of you? it walks that razor-thin line, never tipping into spectacle, never reducing the Holocaust to a plot point.
i’ve admired Eisenberg’s writing since his early McSweeney days. it’s thrilling to see his evolution. and Kieran Culkin, my God. been a fan of his since Igby Goes Down. glad to see him getting his moment.

Apocalypse Now 1979
this is not a vietnam war film or vietnam itself as coppola has claimed. it is the director et al.’s masturbatory musings on the beautiful, complicated, american male psyche told against the backdrop of napalm and dead gook spectacle.
how tragic that man’s lust for war hurts his soul so. how dreadful that milky white french women live without husbands in the far south east. i mourn the bald brando who thinks himself a cult leader of creepy brown savages.…

The Brutalist 2024
purposeless cinematography, awful acting from everyone but adrien brody, dialogue just as empty and oppressive as the long periods of silence. exposition dump in the last 5 minutes of the film. zionist agitprop disguising itself as a film about the political underpinnings of an important (if ugly) architectural movement. three shots of philadelphia’s architecture does not an arthouse film make. and the cross reveal at the end was entirely underwhelming. the best parts of the film were the marcel breuer chairs and the bauhaus inspired library.
other than that
trash. brady courbet is trash.
